Character EQ
Six dials and no numbers; shape the balance by ear while the loudness stays where it was.
Open the studio
The Character EQ reshapes the tone of a track or a whole mix with six dials and no frequencies or decibels in sight. Each dial drives one fixed, broad curve tuned for full mixes, and the output level follows the shape, so turning a dial changes the balance rather than making the result louder or quieter. You hear the move itself, not the volume change that usually comes with it.
When to use it
Use it when you know how something should sound but not which frequency to touch: a mix that wants to be warmer, a drum bus that could be more forward, a vocal that needs air. It suits mastering-style moves on a bus and quick tonal decisions on tracks. When you need a precise band at a precise frequency, use the Parametric EQ or the Bell EQ; when you want the balance steered toward a target without turning anything, the Auto EQ.
Controls
Every dial runs from −100 to +100 and sits at zero in the middle, where the module is transparent. The preview above the dials shows the combined curve.
Weight
The low-end foundation below the bass fundamentals, from lighter to heavier. A low shelf around 80 Hz.
Warmth
Body and fullness in the low mids, from leaner to warmer. A broad bell around 200 Hz.
Clarity
Definition and openness of the upper mids, from softer to clearer. A broad bell around 1.6 kHz.
Presence
Forwardness and bite, from laid back to forward. A broad bell around 4 kHz.
Air
Top-end sheen and space, from darker to airier. A high shelf from about 11 kHz.
Tilt
Seesaws the whole balance around a fixed pivot in the mids, from darker to brighter. Turning it up lifts the highs and lowers the lows by the same amount; the pivot itself does not move.
Tips
- Because the loudness is matched, you can compare bypassed and processed honestly. If a move only sounds better because it is louder, you will not be fooled here.
- Full travel on any dial is a few decibels, so the dials are meant to be turned a long way. Half a turn is a gentle shaping move.
- Start with Tilt to find the general direction, then refine with Warmth or Presence rather than stacking every dial.
Keep shaping your sound.
