Single-file editor

Open one WAV, trim and fade it, run it through effects and export the result.

The single-file editor works on one audio file at a time: drop a WAV on the page, select a region, trim or fade it, put a chain of effects after it and export a new file. Nothing is arranged or mixed here; it is the place for finishing a bounce, cleaning a recording or hearing an effect on a known piece of audio. Choose it from View → Workspace → Single file; your multitrack project stays open behind it.

When to use it

Use it to trim the silence off a recording, normalize a sample before dropping it into the sampler, master a finished mixdown with a limiter and a meter, or audition a chain on a reference track. Audio stays on this computer throughout.

Controls

Opening a file

Drop a WAV file anywhere on the page or use Open file. Try demo loads a short piece to experiment on. The recording panel at the top records from the input chosen in Audio settings; Open take replaces the file with the recording and Download saves it as it is.

Selecting

With the Selection tool, click to move the playhead and drag to select; drag the selection’s handles to adjust it. The Start and End fields show the selection in sample frames for exact edits, All selects the whole file and the clear button or Esc releases it. The Hand tool drags the view, as does Alt-dragging or the middle mouse button. Zoom with + and −, fit the selection, or press 0 to see the whole file; the overview strip below shows where you are.

Editing

Trim keeps only the selected audio. Fade in and Fade out draw a linear fade over the selection. Normalize raises the selection, or the whole file when nothing is selected, to −1 dBFS sample peak. Every edit is one undo step.

Effects and export

The effects chain below the waveform is the same rack the multitrack uses, heard live while you play. Its tail option decides whether a reverb or delay rings past the end of the file on export. Export WAV writes a new file at the source’s sample rate and bit depth, named after the original with “-edited” added. In Chrome and Edge the file is written straight to disk; other browsers download it, up to 256 MB. If processing would clip an integer file, the export stops and asks you to lower the final gain or put a Limiter last.

Playback

Space plays and pauses; with a selection, Play plays the selection. L loops the selection, or the whole file when nothing is selected. The return button goes to the selection start or the beginning of the file.

Tips

  • Export before you close the tab or switch files: single-file edits are not saved between sessions.
  • Normalize after trimming, not before, so a stray click outside the region does not set the level.
  • To hear only the dry file for a moment, toggle the chain’s bypass rather than removing effects; the chain stays in the undo history with the file.
