Multitrack workspace
Tracks, piano roll, instrument, effects and mixer on one page, each a keystroke away.
The multitrack workspace is where a song is arranged, played and mixed. It is one page in signal order: the sequencer with its tracks and clips, the piano roll for the open MIDI clip, the selected track’s instrument, its effects rack, and the mixer with Master as the last section. Everything is a scroll or a number key away, and the transport stays in view while you move. It is the default workspace for a new session; the View menu switches to the single-file editor and back.
When to use it
Use it for anything with more than one part: a sketch with drums and a bass, a recorded vocal over a MIDI arrangement, a full mix with groups and sends. Every track can hold audio clips or MIDI clips with a virtual instrument, and tracks nest into groups, so a drum kit on four tracks can feed one parent with a compressor on it.
Controls
The sequencer
Tracks run down the left; the timeline runs to the right. An audio track holds recordings and imported files; an instrument track holds MIDI clips and the instrument that plays them. Drag a header to reorder tracks or nest one inside another; children feed their parent, and top-level tracks feed the output. Each header carries Arm, FX, Mute, Solo, the G groove button, an automation button and a menu with Duplicate, Delete and Freeze. The ruler’s right end holds the three clip tools: Select / move (V), Cutter (C) and Pen (P), followed by the groove library, Zoom and Focus. Zoom includes zoom in, zoom out, fit and track height. Add track, Snap and the timeline … menu sit above the track headers; the menu holds triplet and dotted grids. Import audio or MIDI from File › Import audio / MIDI…; see Audio clips and Piano roll for the editing itself.
The icon at the left of a header switches the track between audio and instrument. The track keeps the clips of the other kind, hidden and silent, and they come back when you switch again. Until then they play no part in the song, its length or its loop.
Pinch over the clips to zoom time around the point under your pointer; pinch over track headers to adjust their height. Zoom out, Fit the whole project and Zoom in sit at the bottom right, where the scrollbars meet, and glide to their new view; the scrollbar under the clips scrolls only the timeline, and the track height menu is the rows icon above the ruler.
Track headers, their automation rows and the Chords header fill the left column as rectangular blocks. Clips keep a small gap above and below at every track height.
The rack
Selecting a track or a mixer strip chooses whose instrument and effects the rack shows. The instrument panel unfolds below the piano roll; the effects rack lists the chain as cards in signal order. A dashed Add effect slot always ends the chain; in an empty rack it is the first thing to click. Effects can be copied between racks and the whole chain saved as a preset.
The mixer
One strip per track, then Master. Each strip has its fader with a meter and dB readout, a pan row, Mute and Solo, the chain’s modules as compact rows with their own power toggles, and the sends. Clicking a module name opens that card in the rack. The strips sit at the same height whatever the chain length, so equal gains line up.
Header menus
File opens, reopens, saves and imports projects and exports the mixdown. Edit holds undo and redo. View chooses the workspace, the layout, Customize rack, the interface scale, fullscreen and the performance meter. Settings opens audio devices, MIDI input and Appearance, including the theme and accent. The sample-rate readout beside the project name also opens audio devices. Undo and Redo sit beside Save and Export in the top bar. Help opens the reference, recent changes, shortcuts and gestures.
Tips
-
Undo goes back the last 50 steps. For anything older, save a version or keep a copy of the file.
-
The number keys 1–5 jump to the places in the order of the places bar, which you set under View › Customize rack; in the Split layout they are always Sequencer, Piano roll, Instrument, Effects and Mixer. See Workspace layouts.
-
Space plays and pauses from anywhere outside a text field, a slider or a menu (a focused button keeps Space to press it), and playback keeps running through most edits, so you rarely need to stop to try something.
-
Hold a clip, a track header or a note on a touch screen to open the same menus a right-click gives you.

Changes
- FasterLong sessions no longer hold on to every recording ever made · 16 October 2026
Undo now keeps the last 50 steps. Before, it kept every step of a session, and with it every recording and imported file the session had ever touched, so memory kept growing through a long evening of takes. Audio that only those older steps used is let go; anything a remaining step, the open song or a save in progress needs stays.
- ImprovedAn Add effect slot at the end of every rack · 9 October 2026
Every effects rack now ends in a dashed Add effect slot. An empty rack shows it where the first card will go, and a full rack keeps it after the last card, so the next effect is always one click away.
- ImprovedScrollbars that stay out of the way · 8 October 2026
The sequencer's horizontal scrollbar now runs only under the clips, with Zoom out, Fit the whole project and Zoom in at its end; they now glide smoothly to the new view. Its scrollbars keep their space at all times, so the panels below no longer jump when a project starts or stops needing to scroll.
- ImprovedRectangular headers fit the sequencer's rows · 3 October 2026
Track headers, automation headers and the Chords header now fill the left column without rounded corners or surrounding gaps. Track colors and automation controls stay the same, and clips retain their height, including in Compact view.
- FixedConsistent ruler and chord-track dividers · 3 October 2026
The timeline ruler uses the chord track’s lighter divider color, keeping the vertical lines continuous between the two rows in both themes.
- FixedSteadier timeline pinch zoom · 3 October 2026
Pinching over clips keeps the same point in the song under your pointer, including during rapid gestures and direction changes. Pinching over track headers still adjusts track height.
- FixedAll seven track-header controls fit without clipping · 27 September 2026
MIDI tracks and armed audio tracks with monitoring show arm, FX, Mute, Solo, Groove, automation and the track menu in one row; the header is slightly wider so the last button is no longer cut off.
